What are RGP contact lenses?
RGP, short for “rigid gas permeable”. RGP lenses are the new age hard contact lens.
RGP lenses are manufactured with silicone which makes them gas permeable. They not only allow oxygen to pass through, but they also maintain moisture on the surface of the lens, two qualities which previous hard lenses did not possess. These properties of RGP contact lenses make them ideal for being in contact with the surface of your cornea.
The RGP lenses have specifically been developed for individuals with astigmatism, individuals who prefer strong, sharp vision, and people who are unable to wear traditional sot lenses or do not experience a good result.
Benefits & Advantages of RGP Contact Lenses
- More resistant to protein buildup.
- More durable.
- Allow for sharper vision with more clarity.
- Longer lasting, therefore possibly cheaper than other forms of contacts with shorter life spans.
- Can be used by those with astigmatism or keratoconus (cone-shaped corneas).
- They can also incorporate bifocal or multi-focal options.
- Do not tear as easily as soft lenses.
- They don’t shift position when the wearer blinks.
Disadvantages of RGP Contact Lenses
- Time to adapt to the lens as they are a little more uncomfortable to begin with (the lenses must be worn everyday in order for the eyes to adjust to them).
- Do not currently come in the range of colors and disposables of soft contact lenses.
- Not wearing the lenses for a period of time will cause the user to have to repeat the initial adjustment period.
- The user can also experience blurred vision after the lenses are removed, which can make it necessary to wear the lenses all the time.
- They also require a little more work during the cleaning process since the lenses need to be rubbed to be cleaned.
Before purchasing it is advisable to seek your eye-doctor’s opinions on RGP contact lenses, and whether or not they are best for you
