The first diffractive RGP contact lens was made available in 1987 and was known as the Diffrax bifocal lens. These contacts were of new design and functioned by having distant and near powers that were created by a zone on the back of lens that diffracted light. The Diffrax bifocal lens allowed a segment of individuals with bifocal needs the option to wear contacts. Now, there are a variety of bifocal contact options.
Basically, the Diffrax bifocal lens works by providing near vision and distance vision to the wearer. The contact lens wearer is allowed clear and proper vision because the lens does all the work by bouncing light in whichever direction is needed in order to view the object.

This new design uses two different focal powers with different focal points and as such lighting conditions do not affect images. These lenses are treated similar to the regular gas permeable lens and fitted in a similar manner.

Many individuals who used regular soft contacts for their first vision correction, and now have aged to the point of needing bifocals and are not interested in changing their appearance for glasses, should look into the these bifocal lens. This allows the wearer the convenience of contacts with bifocal properties.

Diffractive contact lenses have really improved over the years and it is likely if you want to wear contacts there is a bifocal lens for you. If you are interested in the diffrax bifocal lens then talk to your eye care provider today.
