Children’s vision develops quickly, but this can be further enhanced by some activities.

By age one, babies are moving from infancy to childhood, this is when depth, hand-eye coordination, and color is already well developed. This is also when they are able to move around, this increase their activities that are visually- enhancing. By ages, two to three, there are also some very specific activities that can be done. There are those that can recognize pictures and shapes. At three, the child can copy shapes and name colors. This is also the time when eye checkups are necessary.

During the toddler stage (4-6 years old), children are ready for school. Then, parents should also make sure to take them to eye doctors to make sure that they are ready for works that require focusing, precision and depth. Most children can already use scissors and pencils during this period. They can also name coins, taking note of its differences.

There are some aspects that parents (and doctors) usually observe in judging whether there are any visual problems. Some of these include focusing ability, eye coordination, depth perception, color and object recognition. These problems can be solved if you start treating them in time. There are several ways to improve them, like eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Focusing ability, for both near and distant objects are usually observed. This is when children can focus on near and far objects clearly. Depth perception is judging whether an object is near or far. Eye coordination is usually when children can follow moving objects quite smoothly. Color is a good indicator of a healthy vision. Normally, children can identify colors at three, thus if at five this cannot be done, this may mean two things, learning or visual impairment. Object recognition can also be very important when determining for a normal vision.

Check ups are very important to determine whether there is any problem in your child’s vision. However, there are factors that are considered ‘risky’ that children would need more attention. Some includes infections during pregnancy, heart condition during birth, family history of visual health and if child is born prematurely.

There are also some common symptoms that parents should watch out for like squinting, eye turning, excessive or insufficient blinking, pupil abnormalities and swelling and redness of the eyelids. Another symptom to watch out for is abnormal tearing, excessive or lacking.

Remember to always be alert on the visual development on kids. Eye problems are better prevented than cured, this is also very important to watch out for this since any visual problem can hamper learning in children.
