On January 4th 2010, following FDA approval, Bausch & Lomb announced the launch of its Crystalens AO which promises to be the first “aberration-free accommodating intraocular lens (IOL) with aspheric optics”.  This lens will be available to cataract surgeons worldwide and is the only FDA-approved accommodating intraocular lens at the moment.

This lens is designed to improve image quality on the retina without a loss in depth of field as might be expected with aspheric optics.

These lenses are designed so that once the cataract is removed, a patient will see a full range and many patients do not require continual use of their glasses after the surgery.
