Though 1887 is a key year in the invention of the contact lens, its development and history span back hundreds of years, to the time of Leonardo Da Vinci and philosopher and mathematician Rene Descartes. Contact lenses were originally viewed as cumbersome, uncomfortable medical devices to be used in severe cases only. In Germany in 1887, a man by the name of F.A. Miller, who specialized in making artificial glass eyes, inadvertently propelling the invention of the contact lens further. He created a transparent lens. Its purpose was not to help anyone see better by curving the refraction of light hitting their eye, but to cover and thus protect a diseased eye.

A few years after 1887, more inventions were necessary for the contact lens to become what it is today. Though scientists in Switzerland, France and Germany continually shaved the glass lenses down thinner and thinner, the material was still too heavy to wear for any extensive length of time. The contact lenses covered the entire white portion of the eye (the sclera) and the glass prevented oxygen from reaching the eye, causing all sorts of extra problems for the wearer. The invention basically halted by the end of the 19th Century and was not vastly improved upon again until 1936.

In the United States at that time, scientists began to experiment with polymer plastics. They realized plastic was much safer for the eyes than glass. However the problem of oxygen not getting through was still an important issue. In the 1960s and 70s, huge advancements in technology provided the contact lenses we know today: large, soft, porous lenses and small, accurate gas permeable lenses. Today we have more choices than ever!

It was fifty years ago in Bogota, Columbia when laser eye surgery got its start. When Dr. Jose Ignacio Barraquer finally determined a method called keratomileusis, whereby he could change the eye’s refractive power by altering the shape of the cornea. This procedure has since undergone many innovations. Its value lays in the fact that it has laid the ground work for the techniques that now comprise laser eye surgery.

It is true refractive surgery has enabled so many people to function more fully and have a more active lifestyle, with improved vision. Yet it is not the answer to all the eye conditions.

How does Laser Eye Surgery Work?

The corneas purpose is to bend and focus light, this is called refraction, and creates an image on the retina. If the shape of the cornea and the eye are less than perfect then the image created is blurred. This is called a refractive error. This is where glasses and contacts come in, to compensate for the imperfections of the eye.

During laser eye surgery, the eye doctor accurately aims the laser beam onto the cornea making the tissue disappear, without affecting any other surrounding tissues. Each pulse of the beam removes a microscopic amount of corneal tissue in a painless way.

Different Laser Eye surgery procedures

Laser-assisted in situ Keratomileusis (LASIK), in this procedure a flap is created in the stroma, after which the eye doctor then uses the excimer laser to remove material under the flap.

Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis (LASEK) is similar to LASIK, except that the flap is created in the epithelium only, instead of through the epithelium and part of the stroma.

Epi-LASIK is like LASEK in that the flap is cut only in the epithelium; however, the eye surgeon uses a separator called an epikeratome, to create an epithelial sheet.

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) procedure is where the eye doctor will use a laser to remove tissue from the surface of the cornea, with the result that the cornea has a new shape, thus reducing the vision problem.

Radial Keratotomy (RK) procedure is where the eye doctor makes incisions in a radial (spoke-like) pattern in your cornea, with the aim of flattening it, to reduce nearsightedness.

Astigmatic Keratotomy (AK) is the preferred laser refractive surgery wherein the eye doctor will cut the corneas in areas that are too bulgy. To flatten them to a more regular curve.

Laser Eye Surgery Terms

LASIK stands for laser in situ keratomileusis. In this procedure, the cornea, the front of the eye, is made into a flap, almost like a trap door. The top of the cornea is then folded back, so that the laser can remove a thin layer of tissue. Afterwards the flap is put back in place, and that’s the end of the procedure. This procedure is used to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism and usually takes less than one minute per eye.

PRK - which stands for Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), preceded Lasik. Photorefractive alludes to the laser light changing the refraction of the eye. In this procedure laser actually works right on the surface of the eye. There’s no flap. In this procedure, the eye doctor uses the laser to remove tissue from the surface of the cornea. This ablation results in a new shape and usually less than one minute per eye. It is recommended for nearsightedness and mild to moderate farsightedness and astigmatism.

Provision premium contact lenses are like any other product trying to find a niche on the Web. Certainly, as with any retailer, provision premium contact lens retailers are trying to diversify themselves and offer a product and service to counter all competitors. This is not easy to achieve in a world where most retailers have Web pages and similar if not the same products. So, how do provision premium lens retailers diversify themselves? What can they do to increase sales and retain customers? There are quite a few options.

<ins><ins></ins></ins>

A well designed web page is important because you want customers to see what is available quickly and easily. Easy navigation of the Web site and prominent product placement, easy checkout and the like are incredibly important for keeping a shopper on your page through the entire checkout process. If the process of shopping and checking out ever becomes tedious, confusing or unclear the client is likely to leave and find the product somewhere else. A user friendly Web page is very important, and any provision premium contact lens retailer must pay attention to this when designing a Web page.

Additionally, customer service is important. If at any time the customer has a question the answer should be readily available. Frequently asked question lists are popular and usually take care of the run of the mill questions, however for those specialized questions an e-mail address should be given or even live help. Those using the Web are interested in instant gratification. Once they are on your page, do whatever you can to keep them there.
By making the product easy to buy and information readily available, the client will enjoy shopping and buying their provision premium contact lenses with you.

<script type="text/javascript"

Contact lens cases are not vanities! This is because your contact lenses are either intimately snuggled against your eyeballs or completely residing in your contact lens case. They can be a significant source of microbial contamination and a danger to your health. Indeed picking and taking care of your contact lens case can mean the difference between your seeing better or getting eye infections from an unhygienic case.
How can you prevent infection from going into your contact lenses and settling into your eyes?

Purchase a contact lens case that you can easily clean; rinse and air dry.

Make it a habit to replace your contact case at least every three months.

Make sure your lenses are in a leak-proof case when they are not being worn. Pick a lens case that form a leak proof seal but which easily opens and tightens well. There are lens cases which come with rubber gaskets to prevent leakage.

Use a lens case that clearly indicates left and right to prevent mix ups.

Make it a habit to put your lens in your clean lens case or lens holder and then fill up with the appropriate solution for your soaking and disinfecting system. Remember when you disinfect you kill the microorganisms on the lens.

Remember to clean your contact lens accessories (lens case, cleaning/disinfecting devices, enzymatic cleaner vials and so on) as directed.
Lens cases are compact but now come in different materials and serve more than one purpose as well as being aesthetically pleasing. Some have elaborate and decorative designs, like the American flag, popular dog breeds, flowers, cats, or popular American symbols.
Some lens case have a name placement tag for your name incase you should lose it. Some cases have a mirror in the lid that you can use when you are inserting or removing your lenses.
Others are designed to withstand any commotion and take all the punishment of the cleaning solutions.
You can choose lens cases which have elaborate designs or one with dual chambers. The essential thing to remember though is - that it primarily serves the purpose of securing your contact lenses from dirt, bacteria and dust, when you aren’t wearing your contacts.

Contact lens cases come in many size, shapes, colors and forms, so you really need to decide what you like best and what benefits you the most before buying contact lens cases. However, if you are like most contact lens wearers, you have contact lens cases in a variety of colors and styles already, but you are still looking for something different. There are many contact lens cases that are developed especially for the type of contact lens you use, so you should keep that in mind when shopping. Also, there are some upright cases that require you to place your lenses in a little cage while there are other small round cases that you simply drop your lenses in. Keep in mind, however, that whatever you want contact lens case wise you will be able to find.

For instance, there are silver engrave able cases that hold a small contact lens case as well as small bottles of solution. This is perfect for traveling, carrying in your handbag or sports bag because it has everything you need in a small space. Also, another good idea if you are not picky about what your contact lens cases look like, is to simple buy saline solution when it has a special free case included. Many people end up accumulating what seems like hundreds of contact lens cases over the years because of these promotions.

What is important, however, when it comes to cases is to make sure you always keep them clean and let them dry out during the day when you are wearing your contacts. Having a clean case will ensure your contacts are clean, which enhances healthy eyes.

What Kind of Contact Lens Travel Case do You Need?

There are many benefits to buying a contact lens travel case. As a result, many individuals are constantly searching for a contact lens travel case to make their eye care needs more convenient and easy. Fortunately, there are many places to buy a good contact lens travel case, so it really depends on what you are looking for. First, there is the pewter or silver contact lens travel case that can be monogrammed. It is small, and inside has room for a contact case, eye drops, as well as two small bottles of solution. This is perfect for women’s handbags or for traveling overnight. This travel case can also be used by men. Another contact lens travel case is a small leather or nylon case with a mirror that simply holds the contact lens case. This is good for overnight storage and the mirror helps for insertion the next day.

If you are traveling on a plane, car, train, or other transportation for a long period of time, this is a great case because it is small and you can carry it in your pocket or purse and remove your lenses whenever you feel the need to do so. Then, there is a larger case that allows you to not only carry your contact lens case, but larger bottles of solution, eye drops, additional lenses, and any other item you might need that pertains to your contact lenses. This is good for longer vacations or trips where you will need more supplies. All of these cases and many more are available on the Internet, all you need to do is search.

Finding a Good Hard Contact Lens Case

Anyone who wears contact lenses knows that you must buy several supplies to keep your lenses working at optimum level, such as saline solution to clean them, enzyme tablets to remove protein build-up, and of course a case to keep the lenses in. But occasionally searching for products can be fun. There is a hard contact lens case, for example, that comes equipped with a screw-top case containing a mirror. This will aid you with putting them in or taking them out and is especially helpful if you need to do so in an area far from home with no public bathroom nearby. Luckily, most hard contact lens cases, including the mirrored one, are very small and can slip easily into the wearer’s purse of pocket. Really nice hard contact lens cases range in cost from $7.95 to $24.95, but they may also come free, as part of a sample cleaning solution pack or with the purchase of a new prescription.

If you really want to find a classy way to house your hard contact lenses when you’re not wearing them, consider a stylish leather snap case. This may seem silly to people who don’t wear contacts, but it makes a really nice gift for those who do!

Other products consumers find helpful are miniature versions of products they have to buy anyway, such as cleaning solution. A mini-bottle version can be easily packed away and taken on a weekend trip. It ad provides a more convenient alternative to the often bulky, 12 oz. bottles of saline solution.

Benefits of Focus Night And Day Contacts

There are many benefits of the Focus Night and Day contacts, benefits that many people worldwide are realizing and switching to the Focus Night and Day contacts. Some of the benefits include clean and crisp vision, extended wear lenses without solutions and cases, high oxygen transference to the eye, and protein resistant lenses.

The Focus Night and Day contacts were the first lenses approved by the FDA for continuous wear for 30 days. All you have to do is simply put the lens in once every 30 days and then remove them at the end of the period. Then, you put in a new set! No more worrying about contact cases, saline solution, and not being able to see the alarm clock.

When these lenses hit the market all of the contact wearers that were fed up with changing lenses, buying solution and cases, and the like were excited about this new development. Also, the clean vision provided by these lenses made wearers happy and they were experiencing the joy of new lenses on a monthly basis. In addition to this, these contacts eliminate the need for contact cases and all the solutions you need to clean your lenses.

Focus Night & Day contact lenses only require insertion and removal every 30 days. While you are wearing your Focus Night and Day contacts you will also enjoy fresher eyes because of the oxygen permeable lenses. Also, you will not have to worry about protein buildup because these lenses are resistant to protein. This relates to healthier eyes as well.

If you are interested in low maintenance contact lenses with crisp vision, then consider the Focus Night and Day contacts. Your eye care practitioner will be able to help you determine whether you are a good candidate for these lenses or not.

Benefits of Acuvue Contact Lenses

If you are a contact lens wearer, then you are probably familiar with Acuvue contact lenses. Acuvue contact lenses are a great option for anyone of any age interested in wearing contacts because they are available in so many styles, colors, and for different types of vision correction.

However, you might not be aware of all of the wonderful Acuvue contact lenses benefits. And even though there are a wide range of types of contact lenses specially designed for different eye problems, the Acuvue contact lenses are available in many types to fit even the most difficult eye problem. The line of Acuvue contact lenses includes Acuvue lenses for astigmatism, toric lenses, colours, bifocal, daily wear, extended wear, disposables, and the like. Regardless of your eye care needs, you will find what you need with Acuvue contact lenses.

What is the difference between Acuvue and Acuvue2

The basic difference between Acuvue and Acuvue 2 is the thickness of its design. This design difference makes acuvue2 easier to handle. However, if you are currently using Acuvue lenses the difference between Acuvue and acuvue2 may not be sufficient enough for you to switch lenses.

In addition, the Acuvue base curve is different from the Acuvue 2 base curve. The Acuvue lens comes in a base curve of 8.4 and 8.8. The acuuve2 comes in a base curve of 8.3 and 8.7. The base curve is the curve of your cornea and trying on the lenses is the best way to determine if it fits comfortably.

However, the main difference between Acuvue and Acuvue 2 appears to be the ease with which the lenses can be handled. The Acuvue lens that is so comfortable to wear because it is so thin is also difficult to handle, especially for first-time users. It is thin and floppy thus making insertion into the eye difficult. The Acuvue 2 lens is thicker toward the middle making it less floppy and therefore easier to handle.

As with any type of contact lens purchase you must have a prescription to purchase either Acuvue or Acuvue 2 lenses. Also it is important that you do not wear them longer that the stated amount of time, and replace them with new ones as directed. In addition, always follow the instructions for proper cleaning and storage of your lenses. This will ensure good eye health and reduce the risk of complications and/or infections.

As people age, their ability to focus on near and far distances, weakens, hence the need for bifocal contact lenses. The medical term for this is Presbyopia. Once adults hit their 40s, they begin to notice a lack of ability to focus. This is a natural part of ageing and is progressive. In the normal performing eye, the natural lens, which is shaped like a large lentil (about 10 mm in diameter), is attached to muscles which contract or relax to change the shape of the lens. The changing lens shape helps light to be focused in response to the need for clarity. For the adult with Presbyopia, the muscles have begun to lose their flexibility to focus. With this loss, the eyes have a harder time in focusing. Other symptoms of this condition are eyestrain, headaches and squinting. What bifocal contact lenses do is provide patients the balance to look at near and far distances with clarity. This is why bifocal contact lenses have two different prescriptions in them.

The way bifocals work is, the main part of the lenses will have the prescription for nearsightedness or farsightedness, whereas the lower portion of the lens will hold the stronger near prescription for close work.

There are also different designs when it comes to bifocal contact lenses. The traditional design is very similar to the bifocal glasses and ahs two distinct vision corrections, one on top and one on bottom. However, new technology has created the progressive bifocal contact lens and the two different powers are used on the lens in a progressive way. In these types of lenses the eye has to learn which power to use for the distance of the object you are viewing. Some people have problems getting used to this type of lens, while others simply love them and are happy not to have to wear glasses. The only way to find out is to simply talk to your optometrist and give the bifocal contact lenses a shot.

Types of Bifocal Contact Lenses

People who need bifocals to see now have the option of wearing bifocal contact lenses instead of glasses. There are three main types of bifocal contact lenses and two alternative types of bifocal contact lenses:
1. Concentric lenses are shaped sort of like bull’s-eyes, with the near prescription on the inside ring and the far prescription on the outside ring, or vice versa. Between these two main rings, a "multi-focal" or medium prescription ring may be placed if you need it.
2. Aspheric multifocal contact lenses contain both the far and near prescriptions in the center of the lens. The eye will simply ignore the prescription it doesn’t currently require.
3. Translating lenses are set up so that the near, far (and medium if necessary) prescriptions lay in three distinct locations within the lens. Because of this, some translating lenses are truncated or "weighted" on the bottom so that no slippage will occur and mess up the wearer’s vision or disorient him or her.
4. Hybrid Bifocal lenses divide the near and far prescriptions. This means the near prescription could be in the middle of the left eye and the far prescription could be in the middle of the right eye or vice versa, with a "medium" blend in the surrounding circle.
5. Monovision is very similar to hybrid, with one exception: there is no "medium" prescription. The wearer simply learns to use the right eye for items far away and the left eye for items in the foreground.
Between all of the above types of bifocal contact lenses, no matter what your seeing ailment is, you’re covered!

What if just this Halloween’s you want some more bang for your costume dollar? Theatrical contact lenses would just be that enhancer to turn your great costume into a stunner. You can be the howling beast with yellow pupils or have a white out pair of contacts as befitting an other worldly alien. With just so many theatrical contact lenses designs in the market, the only limits are your imagination! Yet, it is important to remember that theatrical contact lenses are still medical devices.

Sure, you can wear theatrical or costume contacts even if you do not have a prescription. However, FDA treats theatrical contacts just like all other contact lenses whether they are Plano or not. Since they are still foreign objects that one places in the eyes, they will cause eye infections if you don’t go to a professional for a prescription and to be fitted.

The care and maintenance needed for theatrical contacts are not so different from that given to prescription or non-prescribed contacts.

Here are some dos and don’ts:

Provided these are properly handled and cared for the color will stay fixed to the lens.

Don’t use any peroxide or alcohol system to disinfect the lenses, as peroxide may cause discoloration.

Most costume contacts are warranted against manufacturer defect for 1 year. Ask to find out how long the colors are guaranteed to last.

Get fitted for these costume contacts. It’s really a sound idea, aside for aside from it being the law, the safety of your eyes is a matter of importance.

You can have the eyes of a jaguar, vampire, the grim reaper, or a zombie. The range of costume contacts nowadays is almost infinite. These theatrical contacts can be hand painted, or you could settle for the mass marketed ones.

The most popular brands of theatrical lenses are WildEyes by CIBA Vision and CrazyLenses by CooperVision. However, there are other manufacturers and distributors from which you can choose your lenses, and the choices are truly amazing.

Theatrical lenses range in price from under thirty dollars to over a hundred dollars for specially designed, hand-painted lenses. Their power can range from a number between +20 to -20, and their base curve can range from 8.00 to 10.0. The diameter can range from 13.0 to 15.0. Other ranges may be available my special order, but this will incur an additional cost. Plano, meaning no power, crazy contact lenses theatrical are also available for those who do not normally wear glasses or contact lenses.

Range of novelty contact lenses available

Have you seen star of the movie Riddick Chronicles? Bet you’ve wondered for the longest time where to get his obviously special contact lenses. Films and the costume industry need to employ a lot of special effects to make the character more convincing, and special effects contact lenses, help to achieve these look.

Examples of special effects lenses are: Wild Eyes Zebra, Pool Shark 8 Ball, Starry eyes (have the stars and moon in your pupils), The Stars & Stripes: an American flag, Red Spiral: red with a white spiral, Fire: yellow flames circle your pupil on a red background or Bloodshot: white with red “blood vessels”. There are Interview with a vampire contact lenses (Lestat’s eyes). If you’re into scary, goth alterna-rock, you can also find crazy contact lenses that look like Marilyn Manson’s eyes (light blue outlines over a huge black pupil and vice versa). Feeling animalistic? Order a pair of dragon’s eyes, which consist of black vertical slits over red or orange irises, or goblin’s eyes, which are yellow with large black pupils.

Not crazy enough for you?

How about “fantascia” (purple stripes!), or black sclera, which covers the entire scope of the eye, leaving no white at all.

Creepiest of all are dead eyes and mirrored eyes.

Dead Eyes are just what they sound like: cloudy, milky film covers the entire eye, creating a sickly, unearthly texture.

Mirrored eyes were made popular by action star Vin Diesel in his movie Pitch Black and Pitch Black’s sequel, The Chronicles of Riddick. Vin Diesel’s character Riddick had eyes that looked like tiny mirrors, reflecting whatever and whoever was in front of him. These mirrored crazy lens contacts are available.

For even more options, consider lenses inspired by the films X-men, X-men 2, and Lord of the Rings, among others. Have fun, be creative and try something wild!

Special effects contacts are made out of soft lenses and worn according to different replacement schedules, such as:

Daily wear lenses - These lenses must be removed at the end of each day, cleaned and then stored.

Extended wear soft lenses - designed to be worn for periods up to a month and can be worn even when sleeping.

Disposable contact lenses - worn for a specified time and then thrown away.

So whether you just like to show your patriotism during the celebration of Independence Day, or change a mood, special effects contacts can do that for you with punctuation.

However, you must never share or swap your costume contacts with anybody. An eye infection caused by improper use can lead to blindness.

Get fitted for your prescription, for it the contact lenses don’t fit your eyes properly, it could lead to serious eye problems, scarring, abrasions and infections.

As long as you follow the rules in buying special effect lenses and take care of the ones you have, you won’t have to worry a thing about wearing them. So make sure you go to a trained eye professional for your contacts.

Astigmatism and toric contact lenses

Astigmatism is a very common vision problem, yet many people remain unclear about what it really is. Corneal astigmatism, the most common type of astigmatism, simply means that there is an irregularly shaped cornea. Depending on the severity of the irregularity, symptoms can present as mild blurriness to headaches or eyestrain to severe discomfort and visual difficulty. A less common type of astigmatism results from an irregularly shaped lens. Known as lenticular astigmatism, this condition originates behind the cornea. Most cases of astigmatism, regardless of their origin, are correctable. Toric contact lenses are one option for coping with this condition. Other options include the use of eyeglasses or even surgery (in extreme cases of astigmatism).

Toric contact lenses, lenses designed with two powers, bring clear sight to those with astigmatism. Although the lens is designed specifically for astigmatic people, they can be soft or RPG like other lenses out there. In addition to the different angle curvatures they possess (to correct near-sightedness or far-sightedness plus astigmatism), they also contain a stabilizing mechanism so that they don’t move around when one blinks. Toric contact lenses are even tinted so that they are easily located while in their solution. They do not, however, alter eye color.

What causes astigmatism?

Usually, astigmatism is hereditary although injury can cause this condition. It is very important to have your eyes screened. Children, too, can be astigmatic which can affect their performance in school as well as sports. It is essential to remember, however, that astigmatism is easily treated and compensated for under the supervision of an eye doctor.

Toric Contact Lenses

One option is that of soft torics; they come in either disposable or non-disposable materials. Another option is the hard torics. This is because the material is made of rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses, thus they offer more oxygen and can compensate for a majority of astigmatic cases, especially the more severe cases.

In order to understand how toric contacts help compensate for your blurry vision, it is important to know the effect of astigmatism. A normal cornea is shaped like a dome. Light rays focus to a point in the back of your eye, and you get a sharp image. However, with astigmatism the cornea is incorrectly shaped like a football. The rays of light then hit two points in the back of your eye.

Toric lenses return to the same position even after a person blinks. This is because the lenses have thin zones and curvatures created at different angles. There are also special mechanisms that allow the lenses to remain stable. So even if the wearer blinks, the lenses will rotate but returns to the same position, providing sharp vision.

It is thought that a majority of people have a mild case of astigmatism. Also that it affects more women and even children can have it at an early age. The causes of astigmatism are many. It can be hereditary, partly environmental or even due to chronic eye rubbing. People who have diabetes can experience changes in the shape of their corneas.

What’s good to know is even if this eye condition is severe can be corrected by laser surgery. While for those with milder cases, a pair of eye glasses or toric contact lenses will help them look at the world with a crisp vision.

In addition to correcting astigmatism, toric soft lenses are available in a variety of colors to enhance or change your eye color as the mood suits you. These soft, toric colored lenses are usually conventional lenses meaning that they are not disposable. However, some manufactures offer a variety of soft toric lenses that are replaceable every three months, or even daily, depending upon the type of lens you purchase.

Soft toric lenses are a relatively new innovation in the long history of contact lenses. Leonardo da Vinci was the first person to conceptualize this type of vision correction device, but he was not the last. Following a centuries long development process, the toric lens was approved for sale in the United States in 1978.

If you have astigmatism, and have been told that you cannot wear soft contact lenses, toric contact lenses may be the answer. Toric contact lens rating websites can be found on the internet with information about manufactures, prices, and color options.
